Don’t Forget the Ceiling…

Written By: Darcy - Dec• 07•10

If you follow my page on Facebook you know that I recently shared a few ideas of cozy spaces from House Beautiful.  The spaces that were featured were the inspiration for today’s post.

Most people forget about the ceiling and just paint it the age old “ceiling white”. However, in my opinion, if you want to add a little something to your space and make it feel like a designer helped you… you can’t forget the ceiling.  Here are a few ceiling treatment ideas to make your home stand apart from the other beige boxes in the neighborhood.

Idea One: Still in love with the idea of a white ceiling? Well then why not create some texture with a white coffered ceiling? If the concept of building this option with molding overwhelms you Armstrong offers a simple product to create this look. Word to the wise… this is a great option for 9 foot or higher ceilings.

Idea Two: Paint it a different color other than white. It’s as simple as that! Still afraid? Try painting it one to two shades lighter than the color on the walls (preferably not a shade of beige).

Idea Three: Apply beadboard (wainscoting to some of you depending on what region you live in). It’s perfect for a guest bedroom or to add a little femininity to a girl’s room. Inexpensive and relatively easy to install it adds texture and visual interest. (P.S. Check out a great beadboard ceiling project at a fellow blogger’s site over at Razmataz, it’s super clean and adds such great depth to the space)

Idea Four: Tin ceilings are fabulous in a kitchen or sitting room. Vintage charm is all the rage and tin ceilings are straight out of the past. Once again Armstrong offers some great options that are also easy to install.

Idea Five: Do you have weird duct work to conceal? Try creating a faux wood beam. This space has real wood beams but you get the idea.

Idea Six:  Wood flooring isn’t just for the floors. This is a little bit out of the 70′s but with updated products this concept is new again. Create a contemporary space or add some rustic charm… it just depends on the product you choose.

These are just a few current trends and inspired ideas to create a cozy space that takes the beige contractor box feel out of your home. Of course I bypassed a few like painting stripes or murals on your ceiling. I skipped these for a reason, I’m not a fan of the “in your face” theme in a space so if possible choose something timeless other than the big top stripes or clouds that can supposedly bring interest to your ceiling as well.

These are simply my thoughts and some inspired ideas. Have some additional inspired ideas for ceiling treatments? I’d love to hear how about them and how you made your space feel less like a box and more like a home.
